Two rounds left in Winter League

THREE rounds of the Winter Fourball League have been played and there are only two rounds to go.

Four teams will qualify for the final shoot-out and one or two are almost there.

SECTION ONE: Team 5 started quietly in section one and then, in round three, they blew everyone away.

Take a look at these scores. Hugh Dunne 37, Paul McDonald 37 and Dominic Quinn 36. That adds up to a team score of 110 points, by far the best score in the league this far.

Team 5 jumped from fourth place into a lead of six points. If they have their minds set on qualifying, they will do it easily.

But who will get the second place in section one?

Will it be Team 2 who played really well in round three? Roy Sipson shot a massive 39 points; Shane Bell added 35 and Colin Wilton came in with 29 points. That gave them a team total of 103 points. Their running total is 296 points, six behind the leaders.

Don’t rule out Team 4 just yet. They lie third with a grand total of 292 points. In round three John McDowell scored 34, Stephen Orr 32 and Gary McCartney 29. Despite those good scores they slipped down from top spot into third place.

Team nine slipped down two places, from second to fourth, after a rather lacklustre set of scores. Seamus Rooney had 32, PJ Johnston had 30 and Eugene Weir had 28. Not bad scores, but not good enough.

SECTION TWO: The leaders in section two are still Team 7. Their lead is seven points.

Brian Parkes was their top scorer in round three with 35 points, while John Parkes and Gerry Blevins both had 29. Their overall total is 287 points.

Team eight are in second place with a three round total of 280 points. Their three counting scores in round three came from Ronnie Halliday with 31, Kenny Baines with 29 and Danny O’Boyle with 26.

Thanks mainly to John G. Lennon’s fantastic score of 40 points, team three have moved up to third place in section two. Their running total is 276 points. Dermot Dawson scored 31 and Philip McCourt scored 30. Another week like that and they could make the final four.

The two outstanding individual players in the Fourball League are Hugh Dunne and Stephen Orr. Hugh has scored 107 points (36, 34 and 37) while Stephen has scored 103 points (36, 35 and 32.). Very impressive indeed!

There could be a few twists and turns still to come in the last two rounds. Watch this space!
