Treble hauls in Spar Tournament

Beth Stephenson, Conor Montieth, Aine McClure and Chin Nam Soong all lifted treble hauls of trophies at the Spar Christmas Badminton Tournament.

Fresh from her selection for the European Under 15 Championships to be held in Basel next February alongside her Alpha teammate Rachel Woods, Wallace player Stephenson recorded a straight-forward 21/6 21/16 victory in the U15 singles over Aine McClure, who would more than make up for that defeat, winning three trophies in the U17s. Beth teamed up with Aine to lift the U15 doubles beating Phoebe Larmour and Hannah Brennan 21/7 21/9.

Beth, whose cousin Alannah was named by Badminton Ireland as Young Player of the Year, teamed up with Connor Monteith in the mixed. Conor had already lifted the singles and doubles titles, winning the latter with Matthew Prentice.

Beth and Conor found it tough in the mixed final. It was far from an easy victory despite taking the first set 21/16.

Their opponents battled back taking the second set 15/21. That sent the match into a deciding set with the Monteith and Stephenson pair securing the title 21/19. It was a match they could easily have lost.
