Successful week for Springwell as Turley takes top spot in Marty’s 5k

Springwell Runners where on home territory on Saturday for the first race in the Valley 5K Challenge Series at Roe Valley Country Park.

The men’s race was won by Adam Boyd in 18:07 with Springwell’s Christopher Millar second in 19:42 and Colin Loughery third in 20:13.

Anne Paul led the ladies home in 21:09 followed by Springwell’s Kerrie McIlmoyle second in 23:08 and Glenda Whitside third in 23:10.

Gary Moore ran 1:33:52 and Catherine Pinkerton- Moore 1:44:57 at the Galway Bay Half Marathon on Saturday.

Barry McCluskey ran a PB 1:39:02 at the Great Scottish Run (Half Marathon) in Glasgow on Sunday.

Springwell’s Fran McFadden returned to her roots to win the Monaghan Phoenix Marathon on Sunday in a time of 3:31:15. Alistair Shaw completed the 26.2 miles in 3:29:22. Monaghan Phoenix AC hosted event was held in the beautiful picturesque surroundings of Rossmore Forest Park.

Foyle Valley AC hosted the 5th annual ‘Marty’s 5K run’ on Sunday in memory of the late Marty Gallagher, a rising on the local running scene, who was knocked down in October 2009 and tragically lost his life.

Upwards on 1000 runners and walkers took part. Scott Rankin of the host club led the runners home in 15:24. Springwell’s Gemma Turley led the ladies home in 18:49.

Springwell’s Caroline Irwin 45:57, Lesley Irwin 53:17 and Judith Smyth 65:04 ran the inaugural Belfast Telegraph Runher 10K in the Titanic Quarter on Sunday. The race was won by Heather Foley in 37:34.

Portrush parkrun celebrated international parkrun day and the 10th anniversary of the first parkrun on Saturday. The low tide left conditions almost perfect, hampered only by the headwind on the return 2.5K.

Before the run Frances Smyth was presented with her 100 T-shirt with Jackie Cunningham and Diane Hill welcomed into the “50” club, bringing the total who have reached this target, to 18. Jim Blee was congratulated on being nominated as the Sweatshop parkrunner of the month for September.

There were 97 runners, 7 first timers, 20 PB’s and 4 different athletics clubs represented.

It was a Springwell 1, 2, 3 for both the men and the ladies. Glenn Millar was first home in 18:54 followed by Bryan Edgar and David McAfee. First lady home was Sonia Knox in 19:46 followed by Karen McLaughlin and Linda Gillen. Bryan, Sonia and Karen also recorded the best age graded scores.

Parkrun Tourists - Deborah Gilliland was 1st female home at Queen’s parkrun in a PB time of 20:50. Alistair Shaw 19:25 and Jim Platt 23:27completed the Waterworks parkrun. At Victoria parkrun Chris Millar ran 19:12 and Julie-Anne Millar 25:50. Sarah Chestnutt ran 23:52 and Louise Grieve 24:49 at Derry City parkrun.
