The local firefighter claimed silver in the 30-34 year old category on Tuesday, but was initially presented with the bronze medal following a timing mix up.

Stuart explained: “The guy they gave silver to, one of his times was wrong. I knew I was silver, but then they announced I was bronze.

“I was sort of a bit gutted to have everyone there supporting you and see me get bronze instead of silver, although luckily they said they would redo the podium.”

Despite the mishap, Stuart said he was ‘buzzing’ following his win.

“It was brilliant, amazing,” he said.

“I wasn’t entered until three weeks ago after the boys at the station pushed me into it. They said it was a once in a lifetime thing to do with it being over here, and thought I would do quite well.

“I knew I was fast but I didn’t expect to be in the medals.”

Stuart missed out on gold to Brazilian Alexandre Dos Fernandes, the current world record holder. However, he now has his sights set on gold in the US in two years’ time.

“I’d love to do it again. They do it every two years and some of the boys have talked about holding some charity events to send a team over. I want to go for the gold.”

Stuart was supported by his colleagues and friends and family at the competition on the Titanic Slipway.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me.”
