Strong start for Team NI at Glasgow 2014

There was a strong start to the 20th Commonwealth Games for Team NI in Glasgow this morning, including for several locals.

Lisburn-based Triathlete Aileen Morrison fought hard and was in the top group in her competition until the last few kms, when she finished 6th.

Speaking after the race, she said: “I’m pleased I gave it everything I had…I mean 6th, I can’t turn my nose up at that and the girls that were there today were world class.”

In swimming, Sycerika McMahon is through to tonight’s semi-finals and achieved a personal best in the 50m breaststroke, finishing 5th fastest clocking a time of 31.12.

Gemma Kane finished 16th quickest in the 100m fly with a big personal best and is through to the semi-finals.

Jordan Sloan has made it through to the final 100m backstroke and there was a personal best for Conor Munn in the men’s 50m fly.

The Men’s Lawn Bowls Triples Team (Paul Daly, Lisburn’s Neil Mulholland, Neil Booth) was successful, securing a win against Kenya, 21-13.

Lisa Kearney won her first Judo match by Ippon after only 1 minute 43 seconds but was then defeated by tough English competitor K.Edwards in semi-finals. She now contents for a Bronze medal this evening.

In Netball, the Northern Ireland team, which features several locals, started strong but were defeated by Malawi with a score of 71-50.

Speaking after the match, Noleen Lennon, who changed from Goal Shooter to Goal Keeper at half time, said: “We got off to a really good start but they had such a strong finish. It was a great experience, a great buzz!”

In squash, Michael Craig lost out in 3 games by top ranked Indian player Harinder but said “this experience at a young age” will help him develop.

SWIMMING Women’s 200m freestyle heats - Lisburn girl Rachel Bethel (22nd) and Danielle Hill (26th) did not qualify; 50m Breaststroke women - Sycerika McMahon, 2nd in Heat 4, 5th fastest, PB and will compete in SF tonight.

50m Butterfly Men - Conor Munn (20th), 1st in Heat 4, 25.57, PB, Curtis Coulter (21st), 25.73, 6th in Heat 6. Munn and Coulter did not qualify for SF. Gemma Kane, (16th( 6th in heat of women’s 100m Butterfly, (1.02.51) competes in tonight’s semi-final.

The Women’s 4x100m free relay team compete in final tonight.

BADMINTON Ciaran and Sinead Chambers lost their game against Adcock/Adcock, England – 8-21, 17-21

SQUASH Michael Craig lost his round against Harinder Sandhu. Did not qualify.

TRIATHLON Aileen Reid, 6th in the Women’s Triathlon. Emma Sharkey 28th.
