Seconds enjoy Junior Cup win at Shaw's Bridge

BALLYMENA Seconds had a break from the league with a Junior Cup match at Shaw's Bridge against Instonians seconds and they got back to their winning ways with a 55 points to 13 victory.

This was indeed a much improved performance from the Seconds and perhaps it was no coincidence that Paul Campbell returned to the side at fly half. He controlled the match and the rest of the team responded with a superb display winning most of the scrums and line-outs.

Ballymena took control of this match from the start with Darrell Montgomery rounding off a good backs move to score a great try which Gareth Fisher converted.

The home side responded with a penalty but the Ballymena forwards drove the home pack back and Keith Lamont got the try off the back of a driving maul. Again Fisher converted but Inst came back with another penalty so after 30 minutes Ballymena led by 14 points to 6.

Another maul try from Willie McKay and a Fisher penalty made the interval score 22 points to 6.

Ballymena did not slack off in the second half and most of the play was in the home 22. Two more maul tries from Keith Lamont and Willie McKay kept the scoreboard ticking over and the backs chipped in with another try again finished by Darrell Montgomery.

Alan Smyth scored 2 tries and in all Gareth Fisher rounded off a good day with 4 conversions. A consolation converted try from Inst made the final score 55 points to 13 for Ballymena.
