Racers get ready for 30th Irish Kart Grand Prix

THIS Saturday (August 4) at Nutts Corner Circuit is a key date in the Ulster Championship kart racing calendar as the province’s drivers start their final race preparation for the 30th Irish Kart Grand Prix at the circuit on August 25-26.

Billed as Ireland’s largest kart racing extravaganza, this event is hopefully going to be one of the biggest ever in the sport so this Saturday will see plenty of psychological tactics also in the run up to the 30th GP.

In some cases, this Saturday will also be final prep for the British championship round for the junior classes that will be sandwiched in between on August 11-12, also at Nutts Corner Circuit. Juniors in the Cadets will also show their competitive spirit, this being the class that the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button started their career in with both racing at Nutts Corner Circuit in their early years.

Dromore’s David Lilburn will start in third overall in the World Formula class. In reality though when dropped scores from earlier in the season are accounted for David is in the running for a podium overall and second will not far be from his grasp if he can have a good days racing this Saturday.

In the fastest non gearbox class for the 125 Rotax Max machines, Daniel Burgoyne will also be in the hunt for the class lead. Dromara’s David Irvine though is building up his pressure and the pair will be in close battle for second overall, or even the class lead should Stuart Coey from Comber hit difficulty.

In the Superkart classes, winning will be firmly in the mind of Hillsborough’s Noel Lindsay who will start with the 125cc class lead very much in his reach. Only 10 points separates Lindsay from the leads after two great results of recent so Saturday will be pivotal in his contention for the lead.

In the 250cc Superkarts, Ballinderry’s Dese Black and Hillsborough’s Liam Fox will also be all out for podium results. Fox will of course be keen to repeat his terrific results of recent at Bishopscourt where he finished as top Northern Irish driver in the British championship round.

Looking ahead, the Irish Kart Grand Prix will see World, European, British and Irish champions racing at the circuit which in recent times has seen major upgrades take it to European standards.
