The YMCA announced plans in June 1964 to build a centre at The Diamond in Rathcoole.

The facility was to cost approximately £22,000.

In the meantime, Hopefield Intermediate School was to open during the summer holidays.

The school was to provide a meeting place for the YMCA for up to 100 children in the 12 to 15 year-old age group.

Alpha Boys’ Club was also to make premises available for activities.

The report indicated that there were no recreational facilities in the estate.

Meanwhile, also in June 1964, a dairy was fined £15 at Ballyclare Petty Sessions after a school child found a piece of tin foil rolled and covered in cream in a bottle of milk.

A representative of the dairy told the court that the plant processed one million bottles of milk daily.
