Looking back... Courting couples accused of causing ‘black out’

“Courting” couples were blamed for smashing lightbulbs in telephone boxes in Ballyclare in November 1959.

Councillor G.C Herron told a meeting of Ballyclare Urban Council that they were deliberately interfering with lightbulbs, leaving the kiosks in darkness.

Council members agreed that placing covers around the bulbs may be a solution and said they would inform the GPO.

Pay-on-answer style public pay phones were introduced by the GPO (General Post Office) in 1959.

The first versions of the pay-on-answer coinboxes were introduced as a replacement for button A & B models. They were necessary following the introduction of dialling codes.
