Ice cream chimes silenced by council

Ice cream vans were banned from sounding their chimes at night in the town’s estates by Larne Borough Council in October 1965.

The decision was made by the council on receipt of a petition from angry residents.

The petition had been signed by 31 residents who objected to the sound causing “annoyance and alarm” to their children.

In response, a by-law preventing the chiming was to be drawn up by the council.

Meanwhile council employees were to carry out a painting contract at homes in the Antiville estate.

The year-old paintwork was said to be in a “poor condition”.

Borough surveyor HC Walker said the paintwork needed action before winter.
