Roy Adams' tribute to tragic Malachi

Although I wasn't in attendance at the North West 200, I feel compelled to mention the sad death of Malachi Mitchell Thomas at the event.

He was, without any doubt, the brightest new star on the scene at the minute. Having had a successful Supermoto career, Mal moved to tarmac racing and already this year had 10 podiums.

It’s only a few week ago that he came to the attention of a lot of people in this area when he performed superbly in the Mid-Antrim ‘150’ at Clough

I met him at Tandragee a couple of weeks later and he was one of the nicest lads I have ever spoken to.

He said thanks for anything he was given, and even asked me for a copy of the photo that I took of him at Mid Antrim. I still have it here for him.

At just 20 years of age, who is to say what might have been. Now his dad and best friend Kevin is left to remember what he has called the perfect son.

As usual, there have been calls to ban the NW and indeed some guy has started a petition to ‘Build a GP track and move the NW onto that’ I’ll sign it if he has a few hundred million to spare.

To do that would only insult the memory of all the riders who have lost their lives at the North West, and I’m not about to do that.

I can only add my sadness and condolences to those of hundreds of others and give them to Kevin Thomas and the John Burrows team.
