Maxwell named East Coast’s Athlete of Year at awards night

East Coast AC athletes were rewarded for their efforts over the past year with the club’s first annual prize-giving evening on Saturday.

Justin Maxwell was named Male Athlete of the Year, while Allyson O’Toole won Female Athlete of the Year. Most Improved Athlete went to Daniel Girvin, while Adele Neill was awarded Female Veteran of the Year. David Clarke was named Male Veteran of the Year.

Championship Challenge

Thirty club members took part in the Championship Challenge Series (Race 3) at Ballyboley.

Setting off over thirteen minutes after the first runner, Glenda Girvin worked her way through the pack right until the end, causing an exciting sprint finish between herself and Linzi Conway. However, it was Glenda who kept up the momentum and just pipped Linzi to the finish line, finishing in 48:49 resulting in an actual time for the distance of 35:25 (1st place) which also was the quickest female time of the day. Linzi Conway reached the finish just one second later (48:50), gaining seven places throughout the race, Linzi was rewarded for her efforts with a 2nd place finish, achieving an actual time of 41:26 for the distance.

Pulse Port Beach Triathlon

Also on Saturday, Adele Neill took part in the Pulse Port Beach Triathlon in Clogherhead, Co. Louth. Neill put in a top-class performance over all three disciplines, starting well with the 750m swim which she finished in a time of 18:40, followed by a 34:15 clocking for the 20k cycle and a 5k run time of 19:45; this was a new 5k personal best for the talented athlete.

Her total finish time was 1:15:51 which secured her fifth place in the ladies’ category and ensured her qualification for the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Chicago next September (2015).

Stenaline Triathlon

Callum Sittlington performed to his usual high standard at Sunday’s Stenaline Triathlon in Newtownabbey, completing the 750m swim in 13:49, the 20k cycle in 43:40 and the 5k run in 21:38 resulting in an overall finish time of 1:20:59. This secured Callum 27th place overall - third in the junior category.

Parkrun

Paul Clements led the way with for East Coast in the Larne parkrun with a new personal best of 23:11, claiming 12th place.
