Lynch wants clinical display

City of Derry head coach Bevan Lynch has said he was disappointed at not playing competitive rugby last weekend.

Lynch’s team were due to play Ards who are bottom of the First Trust Senior League. The game did not go ahead as Ards were unable to field a team.

City of Derry will be awarded a win and they will be seeking the maximum five points from the Ulster Branch.

“We were extremely disappointed that we never played last weekend. It wasn’t great preparation,” admitted Lynch.

“A lot of guys were looking for a game and although things are not well down there I will be hoping for the maximum of five points from the game and not four. If we don’t get the five points then we will be kicking up a fuss.”

The New Zealander is still confident that his charges can win against this weekends All Ireland League (AIL) 2A opponents Greystones at Judges Road (KO 2pm). City of Derry will be looking for an eighth consecutive league win over sixth placed Greystones.

With City of Derry only three points behind the Wicklow based club a victory on Saturday will see the Judges Road team go above them in the All Ireland 2A.

“Last year they had a controversial win over us. We had Sam Duffy sent off after 15 minutes. I think we were hard done by and we feel we haven’t had a real good go at Greystones in the past.

“We are looking forward to hosting them this weekend and they play some neat attacking rugby and it could be really close with only a score settling the game.”

Derry have the highest points total in the league with 258 points scored to date but they have conceded 261 points. Bevan commented on his teams attacking style he said: “We have scored a lot tries in games. Mostly though we have scored three tries in games and that is not good enough to secure the bonus points. We play some great attacking stuff but we must be more clinical in our four remaining games.

“We have conceded too many tries as well but our priority will be tokeep on scoring. If we get a sniff of a bonus point then we must take the opportunity and grab it.”

If results go in City’s favour then they can get up to fourth spot in the 2A. Bevan was asked did he look out for the results of those above City of Derry.

“It is dangerous looking around and comparing teams to ourselves. The great thing about this league is that it’s pretty tight and there is no margin for error. All teams have the potential to beat their opponents.

“We just concentrate on what we can do and aim to finish the campaign strongly.”
