Lisburn win again in five try rout

A win over visitors Donaghadee saw Lisburn move up into 7th place in the table.

This important win for Lisburn puts them on 27 points, two ahead of Grosvenor who still have two games to play and five points ahead of Donaghadee who still have three to play, whilst Ballymoney are relegated.

Lisburn play their final game against Academy at Blaris next Saturday and once again will require a win to escape the relegation zone.

Lisburn started on the attack and the game was only two minutes old when Andrew Barron, recalled to the No 6 shirt, drove over for the first try but it was twenty minutes later before that was increased from a Scott Hughes penalty.

The pack were playing like men inspired both in the scrums and line outs and none more so than flanker Barron who was proving a real thorn in the flesh of the visitors.

Ten minutes into the second half it was that man Barron again, who was playing the proverbial blinder.

He drove with menace through the Dee defence to score the next try and the Hughes conversion made it 15-0.

The Lisburn front row of Mark Gilkinson, Tommy Thompson and Andrew Weir were having it most of their own way in the set scrums and the back five were providing the power.

A strike against the head allowed scrum half Peter Weir to break cleanly through the Dee defence and he was able to run behind the posts to make the Hughes conversion a foregone conclusion. 22-0.

At this stage the game was held up for ten minutes following a bad leg injury to one of the Donaghadee pack but on resumption Lisburn went looking for that vital fourth try bonus point.

This fell to full back Andrew Cardosi who in his usual manner broke the line to dot the ball down and Hughes again added the conversion to make it 29-0.

The fifth and final try went to Mark O’Brien after a great forward drive through the visitor’s cover and the big flanker came up smiling with the ball. Hughes converted to bring up his personal contribution of eleven points from the boot and a final score of 36-0.

Jamie Dickson’s Lisburn 2s completed the talking points of the day with a good away win of 18-10 over the Dee 2nd XV.

Next Saturday Lisburn play their final league game against Academy at Blaris and a good support is sought for this important game. The 2s play Portadown 2s away on Friday evening to finish their schedule and the 3s travel on Saturday to take on Inishowen in their final match.
