Great turnout for Powerlifting Championships

UP to 300 people crammed into the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre for the GPC Powerlifting Championships on Saturday.

In total 20 lifters took part including some of the sport’s leading competitors from across Ireland and the UK.

But it was a local man who took the plaudits - Gerry McAfee claiming another world record by squatting a mammoth 377.5kg.

“It was a fantastic day,” said organiser Sam Graham of Sam’s Gym, Ballymoney.

“Things went really well.

“There was a good crowd and some really big lifts.

“It was great to see Gerry beat a world record again, it was a brilliant achievement.”

Elsewhere southerner Tom Kelly totalled 1040kg, one of the biggest ever seen, while Coleraine’s Kyle Vauls secured personal bests in the bench and deadlift.

Another who shone on the day was 17-year-old Limavady lad Hugh McCloskey who deadlifted a record 300kg.

“The English boys really enjoyed themselves too,” continued Sam.

“They have texted me since to say they will definitely be back again next year.”

A number of famous spotters were on hand to help out including Glen Ross.

Sam wished to thank all those who took part and helped on the day as well as sponsors Complete Gyms.
