Peter the great lifts Glandore Cup

Despite some pin positions that wouldn’t look out of place in Augusta, Peter, playing off fourteen, bounced back from a quadruple bogey at the fourth to complete his last eleven holes in one under par for a two stroke winning margin.

Second place went to Bangor member Dale Murray with a nett 66 and Aiden Higgins was third after also recording a nett 66.

A two under par back nine helped James McKay finish fourth on nett 69 with the stableford prizes going to Conor McGarry on 39 points and Sean McCormick on 38 points.

The Glandore Cup gross prizes went to Rory Gallagher with a 73 and to John Callan with a 75. The wet weather on Tuesday reduced the field in the open stableford competition but the scoring was still good with Raymond Browne winning on 39 points and Colin Smyth finishing second with 37 points.

Wednesday’s open competition was won in fine style by Liam Gallagher who played the last five holes in one under par to finish with 42 points, five clear of the chasing pack. Four golfers returned 37 points on Wednesday with Gerard Butler’s finishing in second place, David McMullan in third, Aaron McAuley in fourth and David Senior from Shandon Park collecting the fifth prize on offer.

The breezy conditions made scoring tricky in the April Medal on Saturday with the top four all registering nett 69’s in the competition. A brilliant three under par back nine from five handicapper Rory Gallagher ensured he picked up the first prize ahead of Stuart Nevin in second, Owen Kennedy in third and Billy Rooney in fourth place. John Armstrong collected the stableford prize on Saturday with 37 points ahead of James Shirley, John Higgins jnr, Terence McHugh and Colm Davis on count-back. The gross prizes in the Medal went to Patrick Dallat jnr with a 72 and Michael Dallat jnr with a 76.

Danny Taggart was in top form on Sunday as the nine handicapper wrapped up victory in the stableford competition with a total of 40 points. In a similar scenario to the previous Sunday’s competition, a total of six golfers finished on 39 points with John Morgan, James McKay and Liam Laverty finishing in second, third and fourth places ahead of Owen Harrigan, Martin Morgan and Robert Bones on count-back.

Ballycastle’s Fred Daly golfers bowed out of this year’s cup competition on Sunday after coming up against a formidable Belvoir Park team in their opening round encounter but all is not lost for the club’s youngsters as they will still have a match in the plate competition to look forward to.

There was better news in the Ulster Fourball Trophy competition as Victor Young and his men trounced their Greenacres opponents 5-0 in the home leg on Saturday and they are sure to be in buoyant mood ahead of the return leg next weekend.

Next Saturday is the qualifying day for the Silver Mounted Golf Ball at Ballycastle with the top 32 nett scores in the fourball betterball competition progressing to the match-play stages. A stableford competition will be held on Sunday.

Looking further ahead, Saturday 28th April is the qualifying day for the Valencia, Tieve Tara and Culfeightrin Cups with the top sixteen stableford scores in each handicap section qualifying for the match-play rounds. Members with handicaps of eleven and under take part in the Valencia Cup, those between twelve and sixteen play in the Tieve Tara Cup and anyone with a handicap of seventeen or more will be in the Culfeightrin Cup.

Voucher prizes will be awarded to the top two scores in each handicap section on Saturday as well as to the overall match-play winners and runners-up.
