Jonathan heads Barbour qualifiers

DUNMURRY Golf Club’s first stroke competition of the year took place last Saturday, with the Doris Barbour Qualifier.

The top 16 scores on the day progress to match play, played throughout the season.

Strong winds made life difficult for everyone, reflecting in the scoring, with Jonathan McIvor heading the 16 qualifying, with an nett 68.

The 11 handicapper, mixed six bogeys with three pars to the turn, level with his handicap, before making a marvellous birdie at the tenth hole, sparking him into life.

Four consecutive pars ensued, before an ugly triple bogey seven at the fifteenth halted his progress.

He finished his round out with two pars and a bogey, giving him a back nine of three over par, and an overall gross score of 79.

Michael Cassidy (19) took second spot, scoring an equally pleasing nett 68, just losing out by virtue of a count back.

He made steady progress over the front nine, picking up a solitary par at the fifth, to off set a double bogey seven, at the par 5 fourth hole, and reached the turn a shot under his handicap.

Apart from a double bogey six at the eleventh, Michael was again steady over the back nine, and picked up pars at the fourteenth and sixteenth to help him into second spot.

Ivor Moffitt (10) grabbed third place, once again on nett 68.
Ivor parred the first five holes, to get off to a fantastic start, and after a bogey at the sixth, he picked up a birdie at the seventh, before making another par at the eighth.

Disaster struck at the ninth though, as he ran up a triple bogey seven, taking him to three over par for the day.

Two bogeys at the next two holes looked like ruining his day, but he rallied to par the next two holes before picking up a second birdie of the day at the fourteenth.

He finished disappointingly though, making two double bogeys in his last four holes, leaving him in third place.

Dan Daly took fourth place on nett 69, just ahead of Steven Holdsworth and John McIlwaine Junior who finished on the same number.

The cut came at nett 71, with four golfers missing out on that number, one of whom was Best Gross winner Stephen Crowe, despite shooting an excellent one under par 69.

He began the back nine with a birdie at the tenth before picking up his fourth birdie of the day at the fourteenth, to take him to three under par.

All his good work was spoiled slightly with back to back bogeys at fifteen and sixteen as he closed out his round on one under par 69.
