Heavy rain delays start at Club’s ‘Winter League’ competition

The heavy rain on Friday night left the Lisburn course unplayable to the early starters on Saturday morning.

Head greenkeeper Robert Nelson had no choice but to keep the course closed until 11.30 am. This restricted the number of entries but over 60 competitors took part in the Winter League.

Mark Jamison (8) recorded the best score of the day. He completed the front nine in 35 for 23 points. He started with three fours and followed with three threes to go two under par. He dropped a stroke at the seventh but had a birdie four at the eighth. He finished with a five at the ninth to win Division 1 by two points from Kevin Smyth (12). Gavin Alderdice (6) was third on count back after a level par round of 36.

Six competitors finished with 19 points in Division 2. Jim Burns

Henry McMahon, Tom Dougherty, Tom Maher, Des Kerr and Chris Collins. Jim Burns finished with three pars to win on count back from Dessie Kerr with Tom Dougherty (14) third.

Billy Lutton (24) had a par four at the difficult third hole for four points on his way to winning Division 3 with 22 points. Rory Shahaghan (23), Chris Scott (22), Eric Wilkinson (24) and Ian Shane finished on 18.

Rory’s better finish gave him second place with Eric Wilkinson third.

Only five players registered birdie twos: Gavin Alderdice, Henry McMahon, David Waterworth, Cameron Allison and David Phelan

Competitions Convener Sam Moore is also running Aggregate and eclectic competitions the results of which will become clearer after a few more rounds.

Sunday Winter League: Vice Captain Kenny Haslem (10) played the front nine in level par for 23pts to secure top spot. Mark Jamieson and Stevie Shields were one point in arrears with Mark’s better finish over the last six holes giving him second place.

After four rounds the lead is shared b five players: Bob Hope, Clive Black, Colin Jeffers, Des Kerr and John Green.

Thirty juveniles took part in the first round of their Winter League programme.
