Good scores despite dismal conditions at Lisburn Golf Club

The damp and windy conditions last Saturday did not prevent ten competitors scoring 38 points or better in the Postle Cup competition.

Four players: Ken Alderdice (27), Ken Haslem (10), George Heatherington (19) and Ivor McCandless (15) finished with 39 points.

Ivor McCandless had the best opening nine with 21 points. He recovered from a double bogey seven at the par five 12th to finish 5,5,3 for 18 points.

George Heatherington had 19 points on the front nine. He continued to play well on the back nine but finished 6,5,4 for 20 points.

Despite a ‘ding’ at the short sixth, Ken Alderdice reached the turn with 18 points.

A birdie three at the ninth also gave Ken Haslem 18 points for the front nine.

Both players scored 21 points on the back nine. They tied on the last six holes so the outcome had to be decided over the last three.

Ken Haslem finished 5,5,3 for six points while Ken Alderdice finished 6,6,3 for seven points to win the trophy.

John Price, Adam McKendry, Nicholas Orr, Joe Davey, Linton Kennedy and John Green all finished on 38.

The Long Kesh Cup for the lower handicap players was won by Norman McNellis (3). He had a brilliant front nine of 33 for 22 points. He failed to score on the 16th but still finished with 39 points to win by two from Trevor Hewitt (6).

Greg Bailie (6) was third on 36. Both competitions were sponsored by Titan Air Conditioning.

Wednesday Stableford: 1st Kyle Patton (8) 42 pts, 2nd Noel Quinn (14) 41 pts, 3rd Derek McAfee (20) 40 pts on count back from Kenny Burns (11).

Lisburn travel to Rossmore in the second leg of the Ulster Fourball competition on Saturday. Lisburn hold a 3½ – 1½ advantage after the home leg but team captain Paul Smith knows that it will be difficult to win two points on the hilly Rossmore course.
