Golf: Loughery wins Resort Cup at Roe Park

Last week saw the weather predictably take a turn for the worse but the hardy golfers at Roe Park weren’t to be denied their golfing fix as they continued to turn out in large numbers.

There were some great prizes up for grabs in the Roe Park Resort Cup which was played over two days, Thursday and Saturday. Keith Loughery, who has had a quiet season so far by his standards, had a simply superb round on Thursday scoring 45 points to take the overall victory.

His round included eight pars and a birdie at the tough twelfth hole. Ross Brown shot a superb 42 points to secure second place overall and John Carmichael continued his fine form taking third place with 40 points.

Kieran Berryman also scored 40 points and this was enough for the gross prize as well as a few more precious Golfer of the Year points. Johnathan McAreavey won the front nine prize with 21 points and Danny Quinn also had 21 points to win the Back 9 Prize.

Kieran Berryman looks like winning his fourth successive Golfer of the Year title thanks to some seriously impressive form so far this season. He sits proudly on top of the leader board with 108 points. Last years’ runner-up Andy Young has it all to do once more as he occupies second place on 65 points. Ricky Cochrane has now leap frogged son Jamie to occupy third place on 53 points, with Jamie now in fifth place on 50 points.

With plenty of competitions left it’s up to the rest to improve if they want to stop Kieran from once more being crowned champion.

The North West Inter Club League team headed to Faughan Valley GC to defend a 5&2 lead from the home leg in the second round of the league matches. Unfortunately they were unceremoniously beaten 6&1 to lose the tie and will now hope for a better performance at Greencastle GC.

This week sees the quarter final stages of the Geoffrey Conn Doubles and George McKeever Singles Matchplay get underway as well as a Club Stableford on Saturday sponsored by Limavady Travel.
