Adams is first man in Currie Cup event at Raceview

The Curtis Peugeot-sponsored Currie Cup - one of the oldest pieces of silverware in the Raceview trophy cabinet - was down for decision recently.

The winner was Andrew Adams who, off a 13 handicap, produced a total of 42 stableford points but he had to depend upon his final six holes to see off runner-up Steven Bell.

Adams scored seven pars, bogeyed the second and dropped two shots on the par three fourth, where he failed to score any points.

Entering the second nine with 21 points on his card, he played the second nine in five pars and four bogeys but a strong finish of 14 points over the last six holes proved decisive.

Runner-up Bell (20) had a similar points total only to lose out by a point over the final six holes.

His first nine hole total of 21 points included a triple bogey on the sixth but he birdied the next hole, which yielded four points.

The second nine was made up of five fours and four fives for a further 21 points.

Category one was won by five-handicapper Michael Smyth with 39 points, having played the course in two over par gross.

John Brown (10) had the best score in category two, that being 40 points, which came from five pars and four bogeys for 19 points, to which he added five pars and a birdie at 14 only to drop a shot apiece at each of the last three holes.

Category three was won by Dylan Cole (15) with a total of 38 points, of which 20 came from the outward nine.

Category four was won by Martin Agnew (19) with 38 points from two equal nines of 19. Martin played steadily, using his handicap allowance well, and his only slip came on the last hole where he scored no points.

Gary Black (1) was the best gross prize winner once again with a score of one over par 69 shots. A sparkling opening nine of two under par included four birdies and he was three over on the home stretch.

THOMPSON CUP

Former Ballymena United footballer Graham Fox returned a total of 39 points to win the seniors’ Thompson Cup competition.

Fox scored 21 points from his outward nine and his second nine was steady one-over scoring with the exception of double bogeys at 11 and 12 as he added a further 21 points.

He had a slender one point margin over second-placed second placed Gordon Caldwell who, having a shot on handicap at each hole, was going nicely until he failed to score any points at the eighth or ninth as he finished the opening nine holes with 17 points. His second nine was much better with six single bogeys and three pars for 21 points.

He finished one ahead of 13-handicapper George Horner, whose opening nine produced just 15 points before a transformation of 22 points from the second nine.
