GOLF: Winter League dinner at Portstewart

MOST of the 112 entrants of the Winter League turned up for the dinner in Portstewart Golf Club on Friday evening.

The winners were Bertie McAuley's "President's Men" comprising David Avery, Adie Wreath and Vice Captain Adrian McNeice. Bertie, of course, was team spokesman and praised his team quite highly and his leadership even higher. He only needed to score in one of the six weeks 'to keep the boys on target'.

Only a handful of points separated them from the runners-up team of Barry McCafferty, Stewart Gillespie, Alan Bell and John Cameron.

David Avery won the individual prize from Declan McAlarey of the third placed team.

The competition was sponsored by Martin O'Kane of HMD Architects. Martin was away to support Ireland's rugby team but Captain Derek Agnew extended his thanks for Martin's generosity and this was echoed by all in attendance.

In last week's column it was reported that Brian Mullan would be "impersonating a comedian".

He certainly fixed that with a brilliant virtuoso performance that left no subject unridiculed and made it a special evening.
