Gary lifts the Smirnoff Trophy

GARY 'Gaffer' McCafferty won the Smirnoff Trophy on Saturday on the Strand Course of Portstewart Golf Club.

Gary picked up a birdie two at the third and registered an ugly seven at the par five seventh for a relatively modest outward nine of 19 points. Whatever he had at the ninth hut worked, as he started back with a birdie three at the tenth and added a four points to the card.

Another birdie four at 13 and the points total started to look very good. Just in case Gary carded another bird at the par four sixteenth for another four pointer. A five, four finish saw him in with a massive 25 points for the back nine and a total of 44 points to finish one clear of Michael Barr.

Just as Gary used to play off a 10 handicap, Michael used to play off 8. Michael had 20 points out but again the back nine proved more fruitful. The two par fives were birdied and a strong 4, 4, 4 finish gave him 23 back for a total of 43.

Dean McLaughlin, under the guiding hand of grandad Paddy, picked up the prize for the high section with a return of 41 points. A good steady start was interrupted by a seven at the fourth for one point but Dean regrouped and added a couple of three pointers to get to the halfway point on 21.

Two more single pointers appeared but they were more than balanced by several good pars and Dean added another 20 points for a total of 41.

Paul Garrett returned to the winner’s enclosure to take the low section with his return of 40 points. A couple of single pointers on the front nine restricted Paul to 19 but he came back in level par gross to add 21 for his total of 40.

Stephen Garrett took a bit of inspiration from brother Paul’s performance to bag yet another best gross prize. Stephen carded a two over par front nine but again the stop at the halfway hut seemed to make a difference as he added a couple of birdies at 12 and 14. He had no dropped shots for a two under par to balance the front and finished with a 72.
