Welcome win but Ports' focus still on player development

Portadown recorded a third win of the NIFL Reserve League season on Saturday as two goals across the closing moments secured three welcome points.

However, in keeping with the club philosophy, manager Gary McCullough was keen to maintain the viewpoint of looking at the long-term objectives.

“When results have been bad the focus has centred on how player development remains more important,” said McCullough. “That should not change just because of a result in our favour.

“We had a young side out but the gap is maybe that bit closer against a club like Coleraine compared to when you play Linfield or Crusaders.

Adam Brown and Tiago scored and the one big positive is how that result can give the squad a boost.

“For the younger players promoted up to the reserves, they bring a fresh approach at this stage so a win can only help offer encouragement.

“For those who have had disappointments over the season, it is a reward for that commitment.”
