United are in seven heaven following derby success

Saturday’s 7-0 demolition of Roe Rovers is certain to steer Peter Allen’s Newbuildings United back on track in their Northern Ireland Intermediate League campaign.

As the scoreline would suggest Newbuildings gradually took control and it was new recruit Craig Culbert who put the home side into the lead, his headed effort floating into the corner of the net past Rovers goalkeeper Ruairi O’Brien.

Newbuilding talisman, Ricky Lee Dougherty, doubled his side’s lead when coolly slotting past hapless O’Brien.

Following the change of ends it didn’t take long for United to register their third goal, stand-in skipper Steven Wallace lunging at a dangerous cross into the box, connecting with the ball on the dive, converting to end the match as a contest.

Wallace was then to be involved in the subsequent fourth and fifth goals for Newbuildings.

Former Derry City midfielder, Thomas McBride, emerged the beneficiary of two Wallace efforts, which the Roe Rovers goalkeeper could manage only to parry into the path of the midfielder who took full advantage.

McBride, who joined Newbuildings from Donegal side, Finn Harps a few months back, almost finished the game with a hat-trick, his powerful strike from outside the box drilled narrowly wide, unfortunately foiling a potentially memorable moment for the player.

Another awe-inspiring goal was to be witnessed when wing-back Garth Falconer continued his team’s recent tradition of scoring spectacular goals.

Midfielder David Scanlon netted a spectacular goal against Adstraw in their last outing, his goal was to be contested, however, as Falconer found himself on the back of a well-sighted pass from debutant Kyle Dougherty, pulling the ball into a shooting position, before thumping in off the post from long-range.

The seventh and final strike was provided by substitute, Gary Thompson, tapping in past goalkeeper O’Brien from inside the area despite the Roe Rovers custodian getting his hand on the ball.

Newbuildings continued to create chances as the game drew to a close, Ricky Lee Dougherty and Steven Wallace both failing to convert clear-cut scoring chances.

The bonus of a clean-sheet was also warmly welcomed with goalkeeper, Ryan McCloskey, having very little to do in what proved a polished performance by the home side.

A delighted United manager, Peter Allen, summed up his side’s performance after the match.

“I’m very pleased with the performance, goals were scored by players throughout the team.

“Thomas McBride in midfield scoring twice was positive and Ricky Lee Dougherty has put his scoring boots firmly back on.

“I think we’ve added solidity bringing in players to deal with our recent injury crisis.”

Allen was also full of praise about Kyle Dougherty but he was more pleased with his side’s overall display.

“Winger Kyle Dougherty made his debut which is also very positive.

“Overall, it was a great team performance all-round and , hopefully, we’ll use this as motivation to mirror similar results in the league and in the next round of this competition,” he concluded.
