Newtowne secure another title

FORGET about the great Liverpool sides of the 70s and 80s and the super Manchester United teams of the 90s and 2000s and even the current Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona squad, newly crowned North West Premier Division champions Newtowne have an equally impressive record.

In a four year period the Roesiders have played 87 games - unbeaten in 79 of them and winning 75, scoring 335 goals in the process, and they have only lost once at home in the last four years.

Newtowne have won every home game for last three years, that's 27 straight victories and they have also secured nine trophies in the process.

This season so far they have played 25 games, securing victories from 24 of them, losing once in the Coca/Cola Irish Junior Cup to Sion Swifts.

For joint managers Michael Burns and Martin Holland they have been delighted by the efforts of all the players during the last four years.

"First of all on behalf of Newtowne's management team we would like to thank all the players for their remarkable achievement," said Burns.

"A lot of dedication and commitment has been shown over the years not only by management but by a fantastic group of players as well to achieve the standards that they are achieving. Nine trophies to date has been win and it is something very special to be involved in. The more other local teams will never give the boys credit for what is being achieved but it will be a long time before any other team surpasses what they are doing at present."

"We have had 27 straight wins at home in the league over three years and 16 straight league wins this seasons home and away is an outstanding record at any level of football.

"There has been a lot of talk about the league getting easier and the standards are dropping but that is ridiculous talk and probably trying to take away what our boys are achieving. When you take a look at how well north west teams have done in the irish junior cup it goes to show the league is still strong."

For Holland he too was thrilled by the impressive record: "We are proud to have raised the bar and we know any team we play against raise their level cause we are the team to beat.

"Over the years we have had some fantastic players and I would urge all local talent and beyond to come on board cause we as a club team and a group will not stop working hard to keep winning trophies," concluded Holland.
