FOOTBALL: Dean Shiels basking in moment after Rangers gain top flight promotion

Northern Ireland international Dean Shiels had every reason to savour Tuesday night's win over Dumbarton and the Championship-winning campaign given that he is one of only three players to play in each of the last four seasons in the lower divisions of Scottish football, with Lee Wallace and David Templeton being the others.

Shiels, who’s father Kenny is Derry City manager, described his joy at the ‘journey’ finally having been completed.

“It’s been a long journey but brilliant all the same,” he said.

“There are only a few of them to have played every season. It hasn’t been easy to win each League, despite everyone expecting it.

“No opposition team will all you to walk all over them. Every victory has to be earned.

“It’s been very emotional - a long and tough journey. The club was always going to get back to where they belong and it’s great to have been a part of it.”
