Duo play their part in Irish medal win

GEOFF McCabe scored and Eugene Magee featured as Ireland won their first ever senior medal in Argentina at the weekend.

The ‘Green Machine’ were taken to a golden goal decider against Malaysia with McCabe opening the scoring in the third minute when the influential Michael Watt found him on the edge of the circle to thunder a shot past the Malaysian ‘keeper.

As the game progressed and neared full time Magee was given his marching orders and Ireland had to hold out for extra time.

Peter Caruth was the hero the Green Machine called upon as he fired home the game winning golden goal and wheeled away to celebrate to the delight of Ireland coach Andrew Meredith.

After the game Meredith said, ““It’s a really pleasing end to a positive 10 days. Despite all the obstacles placed in front of the playing group during the game, we were able to finish with our best performance of the tournament. A massive thank you must go to the entire hockey community for getting behind their national hockey team, and making this possible.”

Also in the squad for the Champions Trophy was Bann’s Bruce McCandless, although he did not feature
