Debut win for Noel

Golfer Noel Murray only turned pro in October but already he is celebrating his first major success.

The Dunmurry Golf Club member held his nerve to win the individual professional title at the inaugural Azores Islands IGT Series over the Furnas and Batalha Golf Courses in Portugal on November 9.

The tournament is part of the Iberian Golf Tour, a developmental tour played over the winter months. Noel scored rounds of 74, 75, 72 and 73 over the challenging Batalha course, to take the title by two shots from Portuguese player Andre Medeiros.

A delighted Noel said: "I played steady stuff, but could have done better on the greens, especially as they are in such good shape - smooth and fast - but I am very happy to win in my first outing as a pro. I must congratulate everybody who has made this week a lot of fun and all the hard work put in, because the IGT is an excellent opportunity for us young players to get in some valuable practice and competition especially over the harsh conditions we experience back home. I know some exciting plans are in the pipeline and hopefully this will happen, making the IGT a great winter tour."

The 20-year-old brought the trophy home to Dunmurry on his return and gave a huge thanks to the club. "I thank all the members of Dunmurry Golf Club who have supported me over the years and helped me become the person and player I am today. My roots are important to me and I hope to continue my affiliation with the club."

Noel was introduced into golf by his grandfather David McClarnon. "I think I was only 3 years of age when he got me started," added the former De La Salle pupil.

"Ever since I can remember I always wanted golf as my career. I decided to give up amateur status and turned pro on the 10th of the 10th, 2010. It's great to get the first win. I am back in Portugal next month for the Carviero Cup."

Unlike many emerging golf students, Noel did not head for America. He embarked on a two year UK golf scholarship in Plymouth. "It has been a great experience. Last year we spent three months in Spain and then this year three months in Portugal. The dream is to aim for a full tour card - hopefully sooner rather than later. Getting on the European Tour would be incredible so hopefully I can achieve my dream."
