Dalriada struggle against the power of Sullivan

DALRIADA rugby had a disappointing Saturday against Sullivan Upper School with all the junior teams struggling to match the power and precision of all their junior sides.

The only consolation was in the 1st XV fixture were the Ballymoney boys matched their Belfast counterparts right to the final whistle. Going into the last play they only behind by a point and conceded right on full time.

An early Sullivan try from a kick charged down saw Dalriada 5-0 down. John Laughlin kicked two well taken penalties to put the half time score at 5-6 to Dalriada.

Sullivan’s strong pack helped the home side to regain the lead with another try.

Several Dalriada Errors frustrated the Ballymoney boys as too many opportunities passed by.

With the score at 12-6, and about 12 minutes to play Dalriada were brought within 1 point as better hands saw John Laughlin through a gap and over the try line. Dalriada found themselves back under pressure again after a Sullivan break from the kick off.

Improved defence on the line was awarded when Dalriada claimed a penalty for holding on. However turn-over ball on the final whistle, and well structured play from the Belfast team, left Dalriada in regret over wasted opportunities and earlier silly mistakes, as Sullivan scored an injury time try, leaving the score 19-11 in favour of the home side.
