Ireland’s World Cup hopes ended

Despite a century from skipper William Porterfield Ireland’s World Cup campaign ended this morning, at the Adelaide Oval, after Pakistan secured a seven wicket win.

Pakistan, who qualified for the quarter-finals, easily chased down the 238 runs to win, thanks to Sarfraz Ahmed’s unbeaten 101.

Ireland decided to bat after winning the toss and although the ex-Donemana man shone with the bat other big hitters Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce, Niall O’Brien and Kevin O’Brien failed to really get going.

Despite the defeat Phil Simmons’ side will take a lot from their World Cup experience and will be hoping the ICC will reverse their decision and allow the Associate countries to take part in the next World Cup in four years time in England.

The other North West players in the squad did well with Andy McBrine picking up two wickets against South Africa and one against then West Indies.

Stuart Thompson also performed well with the ball taking three wickets in two games and Craig Young can count himself unlucky to not start a game, but his turn will come.
