College stay on winning form

Lurgan College 1st XI 5 Cookstown HS 0

LURGAN College continued their winning form on Saturday with a convincing win at Coolnafranky in Cookstown, fuelling speculation that they will pose a threat for the Senior Schools Cup this season.

Chloe McCann grabbed the opener when she drove through from midfield and fired from the edge of the circle wide of the Cookstown keeper. Gemma McBride made it 2-0 when a perfectly weighted pass from midfield found her in the circle and she casually placed the ball wide of the advancing keeper.

To their credit Cookstown never gave up and defended furiously, and when Bethany Barr found the back of the net from a volleyed shot, Cookstown breathed a sigh of relief when the umpire controversially disallowed the goal.

After half time Lurgan College stepped up the pressure and an in form Gemma McBride completed her hattrick when she added two further individual goals to her tally.

With Cookstown starting to feel the pressure at the back, Lurgan relentlessly peppered the opposition circle, forcing several penalty corners.

Lurgan failed to capitalise on these as a lively Cookstown keeper blocked incoming strikes.

However, Ellen Mullen wrapped the game up for Lurgan College when an initial keeper rebound was deflected into the air and Ellen was on hand to scramble it across the goalline.
