Coleraine and District badminton season begins

BADMINTON in Coleraine and District has got underway with chairman, John Ferris once again at the helm.

Louise McFarlane is general secretary, Colin Scott is league secretary and Graham Wallace is the treasurer. Uel Campbell has been elected as the new president.

The committee would like to pay tribute to their esteemed past president Mr William King who served the committee faithfully for many years despite his many other commitments in the community particularly in his role as councillor. The members of committee will always be pleased to welcome him in his role as honorary vice president.

Following on from last year’s success the league hopes to run along similar lines this year. There will be Junior, Minor A and Minor B mixed leagues consisting of two ladies and two men in each team with two level doubles and four mixed doubles games being played in each match.

The Minor men’s league will consist of six men with a maximum of two Minor A men in a team. If any club in the area would like to play competitive badminton please contact John Ferris on 02870848612 or Colin Scott on 07775878493.

Attendance at the opening nights of Sandelford has been excellent and members have been delighted to welcome some new players. Any adult players who wish to join should come along to the University of Ulster Sports Hall on Friday night at 7.00pm. Spaces in the juvenile club (under-15s) are limited but young people who wish to join should come along for trials this Friday, October 1 from 7pm – 9pm.

Ballinteer Badminton Club had a good crowd at their first practice night. Members were pleased to welcome some young players who have just moved up from Coleraine Junior Club.

Practices will be held in Coleraine Leisure Centre on Wednesday nights from 7.30pm – 9.30pm while matches will be played in Ballinteer Hall. For further details contact Graham Wallace on 02870343840 or Martyn Freeman on 07730613548.

First Dunboe Badminton club practices are on a Monday, First Garvagh plays on a Tuesday and Dunloy on a Wednesday.

Coleraine Junior Badminton Club has once again got underway with over 40 children attending the first two sessions in Coleraine Leisure Centre.

This club operates under the umbrella of Ulster Branch Badminton Union of Ireland and is taken by trained Badminton Ireland coaches. New members are welcome. Children from P4 – P7 (beginners) should come along from 12.30 – 1.30pm and from P7 (improvers) – Year 10 should come from 1.30 – 2.30pm.
