Donnelly claims bronze medal in Germany

The Ballymena boxer earned a bronze medal from the Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany.

The Irish Elite champion bowed out at the semi-final stage on a split decision despite an heroic performance against Germany’s Abass Baraou, who went on to win the welterweight class.

“Steven was absolutely outstanding. He gave it everything in one of the fights of the tournament, said Irish coach Eddie Bolger.

Donnelly was also pleased with his achievement, stating: “There was no shame in it at all.

“It was a war to the very end, cheered home by the crowd to the final bell.

“Overall it was a great tournament for me and I’ll settle for bronze this time round.

“It was three fights in three days so I’ll take a good week or so off to recover and then look ahead to Glasgow,” added Donnelly.
