Blues have the firepower to succeed in final

Clan na Gael, who have brought Reserve football to a higher standard over the past number of years, will play Maghery tonight (Wednesday) in the final of the All County Intermediate Championship.

The Blues, who are managed by former Armagh star Jim McKerr along with Paul O Neill and Terry Doyle, will face a stern test against the Lough Shore side at the Wolfe Tones ground in Derymacash on a pitch which has one of the best surfaces in the County.

The Blues who have already secured an All County League final appearance against Armagh Harps having went through the North Armagh League undefeated have dominated their section over the past four years losing very few games in the process.

Tonight the Francis Street side will bring a mix of youth and experience to the table, the backbone of their team contains the elusive Ronan O’Hara, goalkeeper Declan McGeown, playmaker Niall Lavery and Conor McCaffery who is the lynchpin of their defence.

With the Athletic Grounds closed for refurbishment the Tones venue should see a big crowd for the North Armagh derby the Clans should start as favourites.

However, at Reserve level and particularly in the Championship Maghery are always a tough nut to crack.

Both sides are likely to play fast and open football on a big pitch which invites such tactics.

With the League Final in their sights the Clans should start as slight favourites for the tie.

With many players in the modern game unable to devote themselves to the strict training regimes of Senior structures, the Reserve game has reached a new level, this final could go either way, but the Blues may just have the firepower to succeed.
