Armoy in cross-border road race initiative

AN exciting new cross-border road racing championship will be launched at Stormont Castle later this month.

The initiative represents a joint tie-up between the International Kells Road Races in Co Meath and the Armoy Road Races, which were held for the first time last August.

The championship is being sponsored by Adelaide Insurance and Coleraine Skip Hire, respective backers of the Kells and Armoy meetings.

Special guests due to attend the official launch at Stormont on Wednesday, April 14, include Wilson Craig Honda star Guy Martin and KMR/MSS Colchester Kawasaki ace Ryan Farquhar, plus politicians from both sides of the border and club officials.

Meanwhile, the Armoy Club has received permission to press ahead with plans for a new permanent chicane on the Hillside Road at the end of the start/finish straight, reducing the speed competitors will negotiate the fast left-hand bend where a freak crash last year claimed the life of an elderly spectator.

The move has been taken following a safety assessment of the circuit to identify potential dangers faced by riders and fans.

A new paddock is also being planned, providing easier access for race vehicles, ambulances and doctors.
