Armoy fail to bring home the bacon

ARMOY entertained second placed Cookstown on Saturday at Limepark and after a hard fought game the visitors went home with the two points in a 16-14 win.

Having been unplayable in the morning the pitch was in perfect condition with a strong sun thawing out any icy parts.

A penalty was conceded by Armoy after 10 minutes to open the scoring for Cookstown.

This was followed up by an unconverted try to leave the visitors leading 8-0 at half-time.

A mistake in the Cookstown scrum enabled scrum-half T Christie to touch down beside the posts for a try which B Tully converted.

However, from the restart poor defending allowed the visitors to run past several would-be tackles and score wide out to the disappointment of the large crowd.

J Cassley came off the bench and soon made an impact when he charged his way through the middle and scored beside the posts.

B Tully again converted and things were looking good for the home team.

This score didn’t last as Armoy gave away a needless penalty in front of the posts which was converted and this left the final score at 16-14 to Cookstown.

Pick of the forwards were G Christie and B and T Taggart and in the backs B Kelly and S Bellingham had good runs.

Next Saturday, City of Derry come to Armoy for a league match and captain G Christie says training is essential for selection.
