‘Zero tolerance’ on paramilitary flags

MOYLE District Council has agreed to support the Stormont Assembly’s Community Relations Working Group’s call for a zero tolerance approach to the flying of paramilitary flags on the streets.

The issue was raised in the Ballycastle Council chamber by Glens Sinn Fein councillor Colum Thompson. Afterwards he said: “Paramilitary flags are divisive and they do not present the sort of image we want for Moyle.

“As we have seen in recent years in other areas the erecting of paramilitary flags has led to a breakdown in community relations and in extreme cases they have caused violence and rioting.”

He said the Council support “demonstrates a leadership position from councillors and shows the public that Moyle District Council is being pro-active in improving community relations in our area.”
