When Daniel O’Donnell met Cilla Black

Three years ago a conversation between Donegal master of light entertainment, Daniel O’Donnell, and his Liverpudlian counterpart, Cilla Black, was recorded for posterity by the producers of Sky’s ‘Living the Life’ series.

During the piece the much-loved and late lamented singer and television presenter who is laid to rest today spoke of her Irish working-class background growing up in the Everton area of Liverpool.

Championed by The Beatles, Cilla had a number of pop hits in the early 1960s before going on to forge a hugely successful television career, hosting ‘Blind Date’ and ‘Surprise, Surprise’ for many years.

It was on the latter programme that she first met Daniel O’Donnell, whom she went on to become friends with.

The candid conversation is characterised by the lack of affectation that made the stars so popular.
