A sand embankment near the site of the old Carrickhugh station on the Lough Foyle foreshore, formerly provided a natural habitat for a colony of approximately 80 Sandmartins.

As part of the mitigation strategy in advance of works netting was positioned over the existing embankment prior to the nesting season to prevent Sandmartins from roosting there.
