Stem cell pioneer visits city

A TOP clinician from a company that stores people’s stem cells with a view to using them to treat degenerative disorders in the future is visiting Londonderry today (Wednesday, August 28).

Dr Brid Hendron is in the city as the guest of Gerry Cleary, the practice principal, at Bishop Street Dentalcare.

Dr Hendron is a representative of Precious Cells, a London bank cell company, that deep freezes people’s adult stem cells with the aim of using them to treat illnesses such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s at some point in the future.

The company only uses adult stem cells and not the controversial embryonic variety, which involves the destruction of human embryos and is thus regarded by many Christians as morally indefensible.

Precious Cells extracts patient’s teeth and freezes them in a storage facility in London prospectively for up to 30 years when it’s hoped stem cell therapy will have advanced considerably.
