Enagh benefits from £6,946sports development funding

A Strathfoyle community group has received a £6,946 grant from the UK’s largest Sport for Development charity, Sported.

Enagh Youth Forum (EYF) will use the money to fund its LETS (Learning and Education through Sport) programme.

LETS is a new two year project designed to help young people gain much needed skills and confidence, which will enhance their CVs, confidence and employment prospects.

As part of the Sported-funded LETS programme, EYF will train 20 young people aged 11-25 to gain recognised accreditations in kayaking, aquatic first aid and horse riding.

Eamonn O’Donnell, Youth Support Worker from Enagh Youth Forum said: “I am delighted to accept this grant from Sported on behalf of Enagh Youth Forum.

“This funding will make a real difference to the young participants who will engage in accredited sports activities, which will build their self-esteem and confidence. In creating a pool of peer mentors we will be able to build the capacity of the group and reach more young people in the local area.”

Zara, a young person from Enagh Youth Forum, said: “I am glad this project is happening and it is what we have been looking forward to - getting active again. I can’t wait to try out the kayaking and water sports!”

Catherine Farrimond, volunteer business mentor at Sported, said: “The ethos of the project is to increase skill in a fun and engaging way. Skills will then be passed on to younger children in a peer-to-peer support method. EYF is a true grassroots, youth-led organisation and I have been impressed with their commitment, activities and lobbying skills.

She added: “I very much enjoyed my mentor role with them and it is evident that sport and exercise have true and lasting benefits in engaging local young people, gaining skills and promoting discipline and commitment.”
