This development is part of the new £73m ‘North Wing’ project which will deliver six new inpatient ward areas and a new main entrance for the hospital.

Chief Executive Elaine Way, CBE said: “The Trust is delighted to make this planning application for a multi storey car park at Altnagelvin in preparation for the new North Wing developement. The site for the North Wing is located adjacent to the existing hospital ‘Tower Block’ and will require the relocation of current accommodation and services such as training and education areas, clinical office areas and patient/visitor car parking.”

At a cost of £4.5m, the multi storey car park will be constructed from summer 2014 and completed spring 2015. The site for the multi storey is the current outpatient car park area. The Trust is currently constructing interim car park areas to ensure there is no loss of car park spaces at the hospital during construction periods.

All necessary steps will be taken to minimise disruption to patient services. These essential works have been scheduled to ensure patients services and clinics remain fully operational at all times.

Mrs Way added. “I would like to express my thanks to all staff and public for their cooperation and support in this matter. The North Wing project will enable the Western Trust to continue with the strategic development of the Altnagelvin Hospital site and will help to deliver leading edge clinical services in a modern healthcare setting.”
