‘Training college project could be moved away’ from Desertcreat in Cookstown

The stalled NI Community Safety College could be built on another location, rather than Desertcreat in Cookstown.

That was the answer which the Justice Minister David Ford gave to Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone after a meeting on Tuesday.

“The Justice Minister had previously confirmed that the project was under review, following the austerity budget imposed on the Executive by the DUP and Sinn Féin.

“Under questioning at the Justice Committee the Minister confirmed that this review would include the possible relocation of the training college to a site other than that at Desertcreat.

“There is a very real danger that electoral politics will come into play and the location of the training college will become a bargaining chip in a backroom deal between Sinn Féin and the DUP.

“The Minister has also previously revealed that over £12million has been spent to date on the project, including £2.85million in acquiring the site at Desertcreat.

“That money will have been wasted if the Executive does not demonstrate the political will required to complete this project at Desertcreat.”
