Roadshow detects diabetes risk

Of the 112 people seen at the Diabetes UK and Bupa. roadshow at the Tesco Superstore on August 1, 30% were referred to their doctor for further tests and support because of their likelihood of developing the condition. Some may find they already have Type 2 diabetes, as it can often go unnoticed for years.

Getting diagnosed early, or being recognised as high or moderate risk, means that people have the opportunity to make healthy lifestyle choices which can help them avoid serious health problems, according to the charity.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition but people who get diagnosed can go on to manage it well, through healthy eating, physical activity and in some cases medication, and live long and healthy lives. If people are recognised as being at high or moderate risk, they may be able to prevent or delay the development of the condition through lifestyle choices and maintaining a healthy weight.

Florence Findlay White, Diabetes UK Northern Ireland Care Advisor, said: “Being overweight is one of the main risk factors of Type 2 diabetes but it’s not the only one. Some people will be at risk of the condition because of their age, ethnicity or family history. However, weight is the one thing you can do something about. So whether you have other risk factors or not, it is a smart move to look closely at your lifestyle habits and do all you can to keep at a healthy weight, eat well and be physically active. Even small changes can make a big difference.”

Anyone who couldn’t attend the roadshow in Lisburn can find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes online at www.bupa.co.uk/diabetesriskscore. If after taking the test they are found to be at moderate or high risk of developing the condition they should visit their GP.
