Protect your supply

POLICE in Limavady are stepping up their campaign to encourage residents and businesses to protect their oil tanks, especially during the colder months of the year.

Crime Prevention Officer Colin Elliott says no one can afford to lose even one drop of oil when temperatures are so low.

"While it is necessary to ensure that tanks are fitted with proper locks, situated in well-lit areas and not easily accessible from the roadside, one of the most important things people can do is look out for their neighbours. We are asking family members, friends or neighbours to call with an older person today and make sure their tank is protected.

"If you are unsure about how to protect your property then our crime prevention office can help. If you are concerned about suspicious activity in your local area, please contact the police. Don't feel that you are wasting our time as your call could help us catch these criminals."

Constable Elliott added that it is not just householders who need to stay vigilant. He said: "If criminals are looking for bigger profits they will target commercial properties. Recently in Limavady a number of businesses have been victims of oil thefts resulting in a loss of revenue and a whole lot of inconvenience. Check perimeter fences regularly to identify any weaknesses and rectify immediately. CCTV, security lighting and properly fitted locks will help deter theives."

If you would like to contact police regarding suspicious activity in your neighbourhood please telephone 0845 600 8000. In an emergency, always dial '999'. Information can also be passed on anonymously through the 'Crimestoppers' charity on freephone 0800 555 111.
