Popular player Davy Gordon passes away

The local junior football family are mourning the death of Davy Gordon, who was buried in the County Down village of Drumaness recently.

Davy, who played for Hillsborough Boys in his youth, was born in Lisburn and one of the founders and players of local Lisburn League club County Down Rangers.

He then went to have spells with Portadown and Distillery in the Irish League, and for a spell was a part-time professional and leading scorer with Norwegian club Egersunds.

He was popular in his time with Egersunds and in his first season scored 26 goals and went a long way towards solving the club’s goalscoring problem. The Norwegian club recently included an item about Davy on its website. The picture of Egersunds from 1980 shows Davy third from left, back row.

Davy had a spell with Banbridge Town, before managerial roles with Drumaness Mills, Dromara and Kilmore Rec among others in the Amateur League. Players of Drumaness were among those who walked in the cortege through the village where local people stopped to pay tribute to the popular and enthusiastic junior football personality, who died in hospital recently after a long battle with serious illness.

Apart from football and being a fanatical Arsenal supporter, Davy’s other passion was coarse fishing. He travelled all over Ireland in search of big fish and last year went specifically to England to catch the one species remaining on his bucket list - a barbel. He caught one just a couple of hours from the end of his trip to England – an achievement he was delighted about.

Davy was the son of Bobby Gordon, a former long serving former Chairman of Hillsborough Boys, and is survived by his wife Anne, son Jason, daughters Terri and Kathy, and sister Sandra.
