Petition plea for better mobile signalin Aghalee area

AFTER years of putting up with poor mobile network coverage, residents in Aghalee have got a petition up appealing to OFCOM, the Independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, to take the matter up with mobile operators.

Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson met with residents last Friday to receive the petition which has been signed by hundreds of people who endure poor signal.

Mr Donaldson said: “I was pleased to receive a petition from residents in Aghalee Village who are concerned by the lack of mobile phone coverage in their area.”

The MP explained that a number of years ago the matter was raised but there has been no improvement so local man Glenn Herdman decided to organise the petition in support of a campaign to secure improvement of the level of coverage in Aghalee.

He said the petition will be forwarded to OFCOM to encourage the mobile phone companies to improve coverage in Aghalee.

Councillor Thomas Beckett said he fully supports the campaign.

Speaking after the petition was handed over, Mr Beckett said: “Nowadays most people have a mobile phone and it is a vital means of communication for them, Indeed some people have replaced their land line with a mobile phone and it is their only form of contact with the outside world in an emergency, so good coverage is essential and mobile phone companies need to listen to their concerns.”
