'Persistent thief' jailed for 12 months

A JUDGE has jailed a "persistent thief" for 12 months.

Christopher Michael Mouland (20), of Larne Road, admitted a total of 14 offences - most of them relating to thefts and breaches of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders - when he appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court.

Mouland admitted stealing items including Xbox games, candles, alcohol, toiletries and other goods in the offences, which ranged between March 2009 and January of this year.

Barrister Neil Rafferty said: “Everything is low-level, petty thievery, with low values and readily disposable so that he can get money for heroin.

“It is a fairly pathetic story of a man with fairly limited ability having any ability taken away by heroin.”

Sentencing Mouland, District Judge Des Perry described the defendant as a “persistent thief” who stole items “for his own gratification”.
