Prince went to Buncrana

PRINCE Philip paid an unofficial visit to Buncrana with his Navy friends back in the late 1940s or early 1950s, it has been claimed.

City native, Ian Piggot formerly of Beechwood Avenue and Troy Park, who now lives in Bangor, told the Sentinel that the Prince had been at Sea Eagle taking a course while he was in the Navy.

“It was well-known the Prince and a couple of other officers went down to Buncrana and had a meal in Green Bay Restaurant.

“I was at sea at the time and when I came home on leave my mother was full of this story. She was so impressed she had to get down and have afternoon tea in the same place. My mother was a big Royal fan,” Ian said.

Before leaving the city 33 years ago, Ian had a business, known as McCandless and Piggot, on the Strand Road.
